What is fostering?

Fostering means taking care of a child or young person at times when they are unable to live at home. This could be as a result of family death or illness, relationship problems or a family breakdown. Children entering foster care have often suffered trauma, so compassion, attentiveness and understanding are key to being successful as a carer.

As a foster carer, you will be responsible for promoting your foster child’s growth and development, whilst encouraging them to pursue interests and hobbies.

Who can become a foster carer?

Almost anybody can apply to become a foster carer, regardless of your marital status, sexuality or cultural background. At Amber, we aim to engage with a diverse mix of foster carers to provide each foster child with a unique and enjoyable experience.

But there are some requirements. As well as flexibility and understanding, you will need a good sense of humour and keen enthusiasm for children and their interests. Good communication and problem solving skills are another requirement, to ensure you are able to meet the needs of your foster child.
