Who can become a foster carer?
Almost anybody can apply to become a foster carer, regardless of your marital status, sexuality or cultural background. At Amber, we aim to engage with a diverse mix of foster carers to provide each foster child with a unique and enjoyable experience.
But there are some requirements. As well as flexibility and understanding, you will need a good sense of humour and keen enthusiasm for children and their interests. Good communication and problem solving skills are another requirement, to ensure you are able to meet the needs of your foster child.
What does the application process involve?
Here are the 5 steps to becoming a foster carer:
Get in touch
After your initial enquiry, we will contact you for an informal telephone discussion to answer any questions you might have.
Initial home visit
This will be followed by a home visit by a member of our team to discuss the process in more detail.
Preparation training
After your initial enquiry, we will contact you for an informal telephone discussion to answer any questions you might have.
The Assessment Begins
After submitting your application form, a Form F assessment will be completed on the fostering household, focusing on your skills, experience and knowledge.
The Fostering Panel
Once assessment approved by panel, you will be registered as a foster carer. Once you are approved, your fostering career can begin!
Types of placements we offer
Amber offers a wide range of placements for foster careers, meaning you will be able to comfortably manage other commitments, providing you are able to meet the requirements of your foster child. The types of placements we offer include:
Short-term
Temporary placements that may last from a few days to a few months or longer. Permanent plans will eventually be made for the child to return to their birth family or move on to long-term fostering or adoption.Long-term
Carers provide care for young adolescents who cannot return to their birth families. These young people need families who can provide the stability they need to help them become independent.Permanent
Carers look after children who are unable to return to their birth families who will remain with them until they become adults.Bridging
Short-term, flexible placements that ensure the child receives the most sensitive transition into and from placements.Emergency

Transferring to Amber
If you are already registered as a foster carer with a Fostering Agency or Local Authority and are planning to move from your service provider to another, we would be happy to discuss arranging a transfer to Amber Fostering Agency.
Amber fostering is an innovative fostering agency, our unique blend of services provides the children in our care with support that is specifically tailored to their needs. If you feel you are not currently getting the service or support you need, simply contact us for a confidential discussion about transferring your approval to Amber fostering.
If you are considering transferring to another agency and currently do not have any children in placement, then the process is far simpler.
